As entrepreneurs, we’re always looking for ways to optimize our time and create more space in our calendars. But what about the importance of making time for FUN? Despite our jam-packed schedules, it’s essential that we make room for fun because it will reduce stress and increase your creativity too.
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
#1: Make Time for Fun Every Day
Taking time for fun may seem like a no-brainer but how many of us take care of everyone else first and then try to squeeze in some “me” time at the end of the day? If we’re honest, most of us don’t have any “me” time because we’re too busy taking care of everything else first. The problem with this is it’s like the oxygen on the plane scenario. If you don’t put your mask on first you can’t help anyone else.
If you immediately pushed back and thought you don’t have time, then ask yourself how much time do you spend scrolling through social that isn’t related to business?
It doesn’t have to be a big chunk of time but try to schedule in some daily fun. Even a quick break throughout the day will help you to rejuvenate and refocus. This could be having coffee outside in the morning, going on a walk outside during your lunch break or taking a yoga class after work, or reading your favorite binge book for 20 minutes before bed.
Not sure what you want to do? Then keep a running list of the things you enjoy doing in the Notes on your phone. This can be a big step for some so it’s a good way to capture FUN ideas as they come to you. When you have a free moment, refer to your list and choose something that sounds fun in the moment.
One way to make sure you’re incorporating fun into your life is to schedule it! Set aside some time each week or month that is just for fun – no business allowed.
#2: Set a Weekly or Monthly FUN Budget
You don’t have to spend money to have fun but if you’re looking for ways to invest in your happiness, consider setting aside a certain amount of money each week or month that you can use to do something fun. This could be anything from going to a movie or concert to taking a cooking class. One of my favorites is scheduling a massage. It feels like a luxury but it’s worth it for my mental health.
There are also free or low-cost options like attending a meetup, going for a hike or visiting a new museum. Not sure what you can do for free or low cost? Ask your friends or do a quick Google search to see what’s going on in your area. There are so many opportunities when you look!
The key is to get out there and try new things!
#3: Find an Accomplice
Unsure about venturing out on your own? One of the best ways to make time for fun is to do it with family or friends! Research shows that social activities can help reduce stress, improve mental well-being, and increase lifespan. Who doesn’t want that?
One of the best things about making time for fun with others is that it gives you built-in accountability. It’s much harder to blow off plans when someone else is counting on you.
#4: Say NO to Things That Don’t Bring You Joy or Aren’t a Priority
This one is tough for entrepreneurs because we often wear all the hats in our business. It’s easy to say yes but when you do that you can find yourself in overwhelm. Saying no was a hard lesson I had to learn when my mom was in a nursing home struggling with dementia. Because of saying yes too many times, I was serving on two boards – one nonprofit and the other was a professional board since keynote speaking was a major part of my business. After five years of serving, I needed to focus on my mom’s care and stepped down. Funny thing – I didn’t realize how burned out I was until I said no. It was actually liberating!
ASK YOURSELF: What have you said yes to that no longer brings you joy?
TIP: LET IT GO as quickly as possible so you have room for FUN!
The other part of this is saying NO to things that are not a priority in your business. If your to-do list is never-ending and includes tasks that drain your energy or you continuously procrastinate then ask yourself these questions:
- Is this essential to your day-to-day life?
- Is this a priority that you need to spend time on RIGHT NOW? If it isn’t then take it off your to-do list.
- Is this something you need to spend time on in the next month?
- Is there a way to delegate or outsource this?
Delegate or eliminate tasks that aren’t essential to your day-to-day life. This will give you more time for the things that are a priority and for FUN. If you’re a control freak like me it can be hard but once you learn to let go, it will be easier!
In this video, I shared tips that have helped me make more time for the people and things I love, without sacrificing my other commitments. Remember – having more FUN starts when you give yourself permission to have more FUN! Whether you set aside a certain amount of money each week or month to do something fun, or find a friend or family member who also wants to make more time for fun and do things together, these ideas will get you started.
